Affordable ways to reinvent your bathroom

Reinventing your bathroom isn't only for those that splash the cash. In our latest article, we show you affordable tips to upgrade your bathroom on a budget.

Many of us dream of having a beautiful spa-like bathroom that visitors will be envious of, but with the average cost of a new bathroom in the UK around £3,000 to £5,000, it’s an expense that we repeatedly put off.

If you think reinventing your bathroom is only for those that can splash the cash, think again. You don’t need to spend thousands of pounds to transform your space with our affordable tips to upgrade your bathroom on a budget.

Sparkle and shine

The first step to refresh your bathroom is exactly that… refresh it! It may sound easy, but spend some time deep cleaning, rather than just a wipe around the sink. Scrub your grouting and tiles, wipe all surfaces (paying attention to corners and hard to reach places) and polish your floors. Go through your bath and beauty products to get rid of old shampoo and soap bar remnants that you don’t use, thus freeing up valuable space.

Once your bathroom is squeaky clean, you can touch up your old, grey tile grout using a handy grout pen from most DIY stores. If you think it is bad, then you will need to scrape out the old grout and replace with new. Watch this handy video from B&Q for help re-grouting your tiles. Do the same with silicone sealant around your bath and sink.

By detoxing your bathroom top to bottom, you will instantly see a bigger, brighter and fresher space.

Change it up

Upgrade your fixtures and fittings, like taps. It’s an inexpensive way to give your bath a lift. You could go for a vintage feel or ultra-modern chrome, depending on your tastes.

Change your shower curtain or replace your shower screen. Over time, they fade and are a magnet for grime. You can play around with colours or patterns to add an instant lift.

Consider a new lighting fixture to let your bathroom shine. If this is not in the budget, then simply swap existing bulbs for LED ones to give a more illuminated look.

A new mirror will also bring light and space to a small bathroom. A large mirror above the bath can be all it takes to make your bathroom look large and the cost shouldn’t need to be too much.

Time to breathe

Your bathroom is especially susceptible to mould and damp due to steamy, humid air from showers and baths. Make sure that windows can be opened fully by decluttering the windowsill. If not, or if there is no window, install a powerful extractor fan.

Plants literally breathe a new lease of life into any room so opt for some greenery. Most plants thrive in a bathroom, but we recommend succulents like aloe vera. Not only do they look great but don’t need much watering. The aloe plant is also bursting with vitamins and minerals and can be used to help treat minor cuts and burns and heal dry skin. If you don’t have a green thumb, opt for artificial plants that will still add a natural touch.

Colour it up

Colour is a great way to reinvent any room in your home and there are many ways to introduce it in your bathroom.

If you are feeling brave then repaint walls in fresh colours like duck egg to brighten and add more light. Dulux have a fantastic range of specialised bathroom paint in a variety of colours.

New towels and bath mats in bold colours are a great addition without any DIY. It’s a cheap and easy way to upgrade a bathroom. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different shades or prints.

New tiles are always at the top of the list but can be an arduous and expensive task to accomplish. Tile stickers are a great way to revamp your space, without the cost or work. Try notonthehighstreet.com or amazon.co.uk.

If you fancy a little DIY, then cladding is a great way to achieve a new bathroom look. Acquire some wood panels and spend time sanding down and painting a neutral colour. Then add either as a bath panel or around the bottom half of your bathroom walls for a beautiful, vintage finish.

Organise

Most bathrooms lack sufficient storage and can appear cluttered with old toiletries, toothbrushes and cosmetics lurking about. Invest in some baskets or a slimline cupboard to tidy away the clutter and keep your bathroom clean. You could also investigate if your bath panel can be swapped for a hinged one to give more storage or swap your standard sink for a vanity one with drawers.

Get creative with your storage solutions to add more of a personal touch to your bathroom space. Tiered wire storage keeps luxuriously packaged lotions and practical wash bags on show and easy to grab. Recessed shelves are a great space saver, both practically and visually, keeping toiletries neat and off the surfaces. Building the shelves into false walls that hide pipework is a clever use of a necessary feature.

Accessorise

New accessories such as soap dishes, laundry baskets, toothbrush holders and beachy sculptures are a fun way to update your bathroom without breaking the bank.  Try a coastal theme with shells and coral or a quirky approach with ceramic boats, ducks or fish.

Adding some artwork will lift your walls. Frame your favourite postcards, photographs or art and hang on blank walls. Use Velcro stickers as they won’t damage the wall.

Replace your blinds and curtains or swap for wooden shutters, which will give your bathroom a completely new feel and help it to feel larger.

Swap your dated and inefficient radiator for a new Rointe heated towel rail or underfloor heating. This will free up valuable space and add a luxurious feel to your bathroom.

A towel rail will show off your new towels and keep them warm, dry and tidy. Ideal for smaller bathrooms and en-suites due to their compact nature, they will harmonise with the rest of your fixtures to improve the visual impact of your bathroom. During the colder months, having a heated towel rail in a smaller bathroom will be beneficial as they are very capable of keeping the room itself warm.

Rointe towel rails are the perfect complement for any sized bathroom. They have a nominal power output between 300 and 1,000 W, which helps to ensure that the unit heats quickly and retains heat for longer. The towel rails come in four sizes and are easy to install with wall anchors close to the side of the body. They also include a 2-hour boost mode allowing the unit to operate at maximum power for up to 2 hours, for that added touch.
