Recommendations for positioning your towel rail

The process to install Rointe towel rails is quite straight-forward, therefore won’t take too long. However we do recommend all electrical works must be carried out by a fully qualified and registered professional electrician.

Firstly, you need to choose the correct place to install as bathrooms are defined as areas of increased electrical hazard.

According to the IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, bathroom heaters, heated towel rails, lighting and other electrical devices within bathrooms need to comply with IP (ingress Protection) ratings in particular zones. This means that when installed correctly the product should prevent ingress of water and remain safe for use without the potential to cause harm to the end user i.e electrical shocks or electrocution.

Classification of bathroom zones for heated towel rails:

Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray itself. Any appliance used in this zone must be SELV low voltage (max. 12 volts) and rated at least IPX7 which can withstand total immersion in water.

Zone 1 is the area above the bath or shower tray to a height of 2.25m from the floor and a radius of 1.2 m from the water outlet. In this zone a minimum rating of IP44 is required. If the fitting is 240 V, a residual current device (RCD) must also be used to protect the circuit in this zone, i.e. SELV with the transformer located beyond zone 2. The electrical connection to the power supply for these appliances must be in Zones 2 or Outside Zones.

Zone 2 applies to the areas beyond zone 0 and 1, which stretches 0.6 m horizontally and up to 2.25 m vertically, including any recessed window with a sill next to the bath. In this zone an IP rating of at least IPX4 is required, or SELV with the transformer located beyond Zone 2. In addition it is good practice to consider the area around a washbasin, within a 0.6 m radius of any tap to be considered as zone 2.

For full details reference should be made to the latest copy of the IET wiring regulations and all applicable British Standard and European norm specifications.

  • As our towel rails are IP44 rated and have Class II protection, they can be installed in zones 1 and 2 and ares classed as “outside zones”. Please refer to the latest copy of the IET wiring regulations and all applicable British Standards.

  • Our towel rails must also be installed at least 25 cm from the floor and not be earthed.

  • Rointe towel rails come with a 2 m cable and plug that can be used with a standard socket. However in bathrooms, power sockets must be installed at least 3 metres from the bath or shower in accordance with Part P of the Building Regulations. Therefore, you should use a qualified electrician to permanently wire your Rointe towel rail.
